Ups and downs

I am often asked by my clients how to navigate and manage through life’s ups and downs and why do the downs continue to come? It is something that even I still struggle with coping with the downs of life.

My biggest piece of advice is that ups and downs will always be there, they will continue through life as we cannot experience a happy time if we do not experience the sad time. Life is not just filled with the good bits or ‘Photo Album Moments’ which are great moments, yet it is not in these moments that we learn and grow as people. It is in the not so good bits that we develop and help to make us the person that we are today.

For me, to overcome these downs and continue to move toward the light of life, is to take action to move away from the down and into a place of peace. When life is throwing you a curve ball if you are in a place of peace, you will be able to navigate through it easier and more effectively without wallowing in self-pity and becoming the victim. As when self-pity and victim mode takes over it will take you longer to move through the down!

For me, I maintain this place of peace in my life through meditation, seeing the bigger picture of daily downs (and ups) and treating myself (and those around me) with more self-compassion. I am writing about this today as this was me yesterday, as I exploded in anger at my family over something small and feeling like I was been pushed to my limits. Yet rather than seeing that I have failed I look at this moment as a learning curve and a way to show and teach my children that sometimes we do feel angry and it is okay. It is important to express anger (in a productive and controlled way) yet when we allow the emotion to overtake us we cannot control ourselves. As I noticed what was happening I removed myself from the situation to allow myself get back into a place of peace.

This place of peace is the key. To get to this place of peace takes ACTION not wallowing ACTION. My action was to remove myself and re-centre myself to see the bigger picture of what was going on!

What ACTION can you take to navigate through life’s ups and downs?

Until my next blog, enjoy your children.

The Art of Mindfulness

Becoming mindful is the key to living a happy, calmer and more fulfilled life. Yet in our busy day to day lives we forget to be mindful of the present moment as we get caught up in the next thing we need to get done!

I will be running a workshop called ‘The Art of Mindfulness’ on Thursday and at this workshop I will be teaching you the powerful tips and tools I use on a daily basis to keep myself grounded within the present moment. It is in this present moment that I create the future I desire, live the life I love, move away from any past negativity and teach my children to do the same!

Action, action and more ACTION…

At my ‘Align with your 2015 Dreams’ workshop on the weekend, I was asked “How do I overcome these negative thoughts that keep popping up in my mind, I know what they are yet they continue to keep on coming?”

Action, action and more ACTION was my answer.

Action is what will stop that thought in its track and more you away from it into a more positive place!

For me, this is something that I used to struggle with, because yes I knew why and what my negative thoughts were about, yet they continued on. So now whenever I feel that niggling self-doubt pop up, I take action in my life. It almost feels like I am proving that the self-doubt is a thing of the past and I am moving onto a more empowering future through the action!

This also keeps me away from that ‘poor me’ phase, which I would easily slip into once those negative thoughts arrived and I would relive different examples in my life where I felt like I was not good enough! The emotion would rise within me and I would begin to feel stuck in this phase again…

It is through the action of either a task in my business, putting myself out there in a social situation or simply just getting off the couch!

How can you take ACTION today to move away from your negative thoughts and into an empowered tomorrow?

Number 1 Tip to Overcome Your Down

We all have our ups and downs within our day-to-day lives. When we focus on the downs it will often make them seem like we are unable to overcome these downs. By focusing on the down, we bring in emotion and often past examples to re-enforce the down. So we end up not only experiencing the current down but also the many past examples of a similar down.

When we step away from the emotion (and the past) and look at the bigger picture which the situation is bringing it will enable us to see that there is light at the end of the down, we can re-align ourselves with the possibility of overcoming it and into the solution rather than the problem!

I know it is often hard to see a solution to the problem when we are stuck in the emotion of it, so to help I always distance myself from the situation and calm myself by taking deep breaths. Often this is enough to see beyond that moment and into the possibilities of improving the situation!

Give it a try today!

I talk a lot about changing your thoughts in the first chapter of my book, Beyond The Schoolyard. You can download my first chapter by clicking here.

The power in the now…..

At my weekly meditation class last week we talked a lot about being in the present moment. This is something that seems to keep on coming up for me lately.

This moment now is what keeps the past alive and what allows the past to continue to infiltrate into our lives.

This moment now is where we feel anxious or worry about the future.

When we look at the present moment with peace and acceptance, then the past will not dictate our present and the future will work itself out.

To quote my meditation teacher..

“Like attracts like, so when we are at peace in the present moment we will attract peace for all future moments”.

How true! We can change the future just by changing our present thoughts – it is very empowering when we think of it in this manner.

My biggest task this week has been to slow down, focus on the present moment and understand why something from the past or future is affecting me right now (when it is not even happening in the present moment). I had a perfect example of this over the weekend. I began to feel overwhelmed and anxious over something that was out of my control (and specifically someone). I needed to take a step away from the emotion that I was feeling and see why it was affecting me right now. I AM NOT GOOD ENOUGH was the current reason why it was affecting me! Which was really simple to see once I was able to step in the present moment and see logically what was happening. So instead of reliving the past and worrying about what was going to happen in the future because of this event, I told myself that I was GOOD ENOUGH and I am perfect just as I am in this moment. This is where I put my focus, not on the external event that was causing me angst.

How can you apply this to your life? And where do you allow the past to infiltrate into your present thoughts, actions and reactions.Slow down today and focus on the now. Be present in the now, not in what could of been or what should be.

What are my lessons from the past?

Here is an extract from my popular ‘Ignite Your Possibilities’ program. It is apart of the Drama Be Gone section, which allows us to start to think about what past experiences are still affecting our current decisions and thoughts!

Here we will look at what your lessons from the past are. I find that this is always the toughest part of this exercise. We have programmed our brains to only see the negative aspect of what happened in the past because seeing it in another way is too hard for us to face.

When we think about a negative past experience we will relive the event and start to feel the same emotions again, like hurt, anger or fear. As our brain gets caught up in these emotions, it is hard to see past them and understand what factually happened. Give it a try; think about a time from the past which was very stressful, for me this was after the birth of my first daughter. I hemorrhaged 10 days after she was born. It was a very stressful and emotional time, instead of been home and enjoying my daughter I was in the hospital been prepped for surgery with the doctor asking us to sign consent forms for a full-hysterectomy! In that moment all of our dreams and hopes for more children had come to a big HAULT and not to mention the severity in the moment for my own life! Fortunately my doctor was able to work quickly and I am very thankful to say that I have been blessed with 3 other children since this time! The feelings of fear and anxiety around this event remained with me for many years to come. Especially when we decided to have our next baby, which bought up all of these fears again. I felt like I was reliving every moment of it after the birth of my second daughter! I would recall the exact moment it happened, all the details and with this would bring about all the emotions I experienced back to life! It was like I was reliving the event again and again! As I am writing this out I can still imagine what those emotions were like but I do not experience them anymore. This is because I have accepted what happened and learnt from this experience. It is only when you can do that will you leave the stressful event in the past. For me, it took a long to do this and with time it did become easier. The most important thing I did was to step away from the whole emotion and drama of the event and see it as a factual and logical event. Yes I was hemorrhaging, yes I was scared and yes I was in danger but I can now see that I was in a safe place, with the best doctors and a supporting husband and no matter what the outcome I was going to be okay! It is hard to do, but a very important process of accepting the past.

  • Acknowledging the past
  • Understand the learning from the past
  • Seeing the past from another perspective.
  • Accepting the past

You might be wondering what the lesson from me hemorrhaging is? Well the lesson is that I am okay and that my husband and I are strong enough to face and conquer anything that comes at us. And of course, on a more practical sense ensuring that you use a doctor who you have the utmost trust and faith!

Now think about a time in your past that still haunts you today? Is it a medical emergency like mine or even an emotional event? Big or small, it does not matter – what matters is if it is still affecting you today! If it is still in your thoughts and you feel those same emotions swelling every time you think about the event.

Organise some time that you can devote to looking at the situation. Your first instinct will be to think about the emotion and drama of it, which is okay. Spend some time writing down and acknowledging the emotions that you felt at the time. Then once you have acknowledged all the emotions it is time to move away from them and look at the situation in a logical and factual way. By being caught in the emotion and drama of it will keep you tied to the event. Write down the things that occurred factually (no emotion involved this time). Once they are all written down look at them step by step and to see what is something positive about each of these steps.

Like with me, the most emotional part of the whole event was when my husband and I needed to sign a consent form for a possible hysterectomy, it forced me to see the magnitude and reality of the situation! When I wrote this down, I thought impossible that there could be a positive to this, there is no good to come of this! Well there is and that was that my husband was by my side and supportive to whatever the outcome was going to be, as long as I was okay – 1 baby or 4 babies it did not matter to him!

Once you have been able to do this, you can then accept what has happened and focus more on the positive side to the event and become grateful. Like with me I am grateful that my husband is very supportive and that I had the best doctor helping me!

The power of a smile!

I went to an interesting seminar recently called ‘Promoting Positive Behaviour in Children’. The presenter Dr Tim Moore talk about the power of the smile….

When children (and adults) look at us they consciously and unconsciously interpret our body language, facial expression, eye contact, tone of voice, gestures, posture, timing and intensity of our responses. Before we even speak, our body signals have said more than our words ever will, which teach others (including our children) around us how to react or behave!

This is something I have known for many years and talk a lot about when helping fellow Mums get control of their lives. As a mother we have the power to set the emotional tone of our household, and it is through our conscious and unconscious actions that gives us this power.

I know when I am feeling stressed and anxious, my children will respond to me in the same way as my conscious and unconscious behaviours will show this to my children and they will begin to mirror my emotional state back to me. I know this then only adds to pressures and often a meltdown will result!

To understand this concept we also need to know how to address what is going on within us, so we can mirror to our children how we want them to behave, with respect, calmness, compassion and love. Unfortunately we cannot fake our unconscious actions as often these are done without us even knowing we are doing them.

This is why it is so important that we look to see what we are feeling on the inside and address these issues rather than any superficial reasons on the outside. Once we are able to address our internal issues, we can then start to make the changes on the inside to reflect on the outside.

My question to you today is what are your body signals saying??

This is something I am very passionate about and I have taken many Mums through my ‘Ignite Your Possibilities’ course, which empowers Mums to understand this concept and start to make the long lasting changes within to live a life full with happiness and peace on the inside and outside. Please click here for more information on my course.

Until my next blog, enjoy your children.

How do you determine your happiness?

Do you rely on external events for your happiness? I know this is something that I used to rely on for my happiness but in actual fact it is a waste of time (and energy).

Imagine if you changed your focus to your state of mind and let go of your focus on the external world, how much happier would you be?? For me, this has made the biggest impact on my happiness.

Once I have been able to understand and stop focusing on things that I cannot change and focusing on my inner world (and state of mind) I have been able to let go of things that are not important.

Give it a go today and see how empowering it is!

To your happiness.
